Wearing bamboo kicks off Earth Day – How a jewelry business is making a difference with seedlings

John Hardy Jewelry launched his “Wear Bamboo, Plant Bamboo” initiative in 2013. To date, over 1.3 million seedlings have been planted in Bali, where the jewelry is handcrafted by a local master craftsman. With Earth Day taking place on April 22, the Indonesia-based company is now adding new additions to the iconic Bamboo collection.

As tradition dictates with the sale of each piece of the Bamboo collection, the jewelry house plant one or more bamboo plants in rural areas across Indonesia in partnership with the non-profit Bamboo Village initiative. The plant has long played an important role in the economy and culture of rural Bali communities. The green initiative is just one part of the sustainable luxury that has been at the forefront of John Hardy’s philosophy since its founding by John Hardy in 1975.

The stars of the new collection are the bamboo cuffs. The flexible cuff is crafted in sterling silver and is masterfully embellished with lava-treated black sapphires and black spinel. The purchase of the bracelet ensures the planting of six bamboo plants. The beautifully designed standard cuff comes in two sizes – the 37.5mm cuff, which triggers the planting of five seedlings in rural Indonesia, and the 20.5mm cuff, which grows when planting three seedlings.

As Earth Day approaches, John Hardy presents additions to his Bamboo collection, including the fan necklace.

The new pieces, nine in total, include twist hoops in gold and silver, lobster earrings embellished with black spinel and lava-treated sapphires, and a sterling silver fan necklace. Rings inspired by bamboo, in gold or silver, are new to the collection.

The designs, released just before Earth Day, are said to have been “inspired by the power, grace and natural resilience of bamboo cane.”

John Hardy stores are currently closed with the exception of John Hardy Soho in New York. The brand is at the service of customers through the John Hardy website.
