Is the reward worth it

The Barenziah Stones are perhaps Skyrim’s most notorious side quest. Is the reward for completing the crown really worth all the effort?

Finding the Barenziah Stones is perhaps one of the most notorious quests of all. Skyrim, as players must scour the entirety of the game’s vast map in search of the pieces of Barenziah’s crown. Many players may not even bother to put in the effort, as it is particularly difficult to locate the easily missed and unmarked items required. As a result, few receive the reward offered by the quest. However, is the reward of the Stones of Barenziah worth it?

The “No Stone Unturned” quest begins when players discover their first Barenziah Stone, a collection of 24 unusual gems scattered throughout the map. By bringing it to an evaluator – something that requires the Dragonborn to become a member of Skyrim‘s Thieves Guild and talk to Vex – this kicks off the goal of finding the last of the Unmarked Gems. Once they have all been collected, players must then collect Barenziah’s Crown, which can be looted from Tolvald Cave.

The reward for collecting all Barenizah Stones is a unique ability, Prowler’s Profit, which greatly increases the chance of finding multiple gems in places like chests or looted enemies. The completed Crown of Barenziah is also on display alongside other items scavenged from the Thieves Guild Headquarters. Other than that, however, there isn’t much incentive to locate all the Barenziah Stones, especially considering how difficult it is compared to most other and best side quests in Skyrim.

Why Finding Barenziah’s Skyrim Stones Just Isn’t Worth The Reward

Skyrim's Stones of Barenziah is the reward worth it

Prowler’s Profit might seem like an interesting ability for players just starting out, but even then its usefulness is questionable at best. Many Skyrim players aren’t necessarily concerned with profits, especially those who have joined the Thieves Guild, a necessary requirement for valuing Barenziah Stones in the first place. Stolen items are objectively easier to find and return for profit than legitimately obtained loot. On top of that, given how much SkyrimThe map must be explored to find the Barenziah Stones, most players will be well past the point of running out of gold. The reward is only really worth it for those looking to fully complete SkyrimThieves Guild Collection. So the answer to “Is the Barenziah Stones reward worth it?” would be “no”.

Perhaps that is why it is so common for Skyrim players simply modify their way around the difficulty. The Stones of Barenziah Quest Markers mod on the game’s Nexus page has over 1.5 million downloads for Skyrim Special Edition alone, and several guides and checklists can be found in Skyrimfrom the online community to help find unmarked Barenziah Stones for players who don’t want to modify their game. Overall, Barenziah Stones seem like a good idea in practice. A treasure hunt through Skyrim is a great way to get players exploring places they might not otherwise consider venturing to, and it gives even high-level characters something to seek out. In practice, however, the effort required is simply not worth the meager reward.
